Learning Japanese

How big of a mistake is this? I hear a lot of people think that Japanese is a useless foreign language to take, but I don't know why. I swear I'm not only doing this for anime and manga. Even I'm not that much of a repulsive weeaboo.

I'm learning Japanese for a year and a half already. It's great. I love the lessons, the people, the language. It's actually pretty easy. (Just the kanji is hard and some grammar)
Why do you even care? Learn it for yourself. It's fun, you do something producitve.

Just worried that I'm wasting my time. I was thinking of working as a translator on the side, but it honestly feels like that job will become obsolete as technology progresses.

Been there, done that. Learn German instead.

I've been studying for around 4 years now, and I'd say just go for it! When I started learning I just wanted to understand anime, but then I found a love for Japanese literature and getting real intimate with Japanese culture. You never know what you'll end up loving.

Even if you end up dropping it, learning a language is never a waste of time.

Well, if you're worried of doing something fun for yourself because it's a waste of time, then don't do it. Learn Chinese instead, it's the future.

i have the same problem. my girlfriend has an 1 and a half hour session with a jap every night to study. shes locked into learning it, but i don't have that power. the only reason i might learn it, is because i have one of those dreams about living in japan. too many people think its the 'anime & manga fever' bullshit but i doubt anyone even thinks like that anymore. japan is beautiful, safe, and i can get behind the culture. i'm nearing 25 and i thought it was my calling, but i completely lost all motivation to try after hearing the words of all those online saying japan is just a hell hole, blah blah blah. fuck i dont even know what to do now

I've tried a few languages and must admit I didn't really like Japanese as a language, but to be honest I think the most important thing is to have a motivation why. Are there books you want to read in a certain language, do you perhaps want to live there, etc.
I learned German for example because I wanted to read Nietzsche in German. So when I got the basics I started reading simple books + learning vocab to work my way up. It wasn't hard to stay motivated because I always had a book I wanted to finish.

I think the real questions is: Why do you want to learn Japanese?

>Why do you want to learn Japanese?
Anime and manga. Kind of a weak motivation but I do enjoy watching my chinese cartoons without subs. I don't really care about the money to be quite honest. It's just a bonus. Just seems embarrassing learning a language for such a trivial reason.

You guys realize that Japan is a closed society and will never accept you as a citizen. Japan tolerates foreigners as visitors, but if you try to live there and get a job, you will be forced out due to racism. They will not accept you and you will be looked down on every day of your life.

user tries to be the wise one.
It's bullshit. Yeah, you'll never be 'one of them' but it's not like you can't work there, it's not like it's some kind of a dystopia in which everyone is a racist.

It's a shit journalism article, but the survey happened and the results are real.

I can agree with you that Japan is a racist country, can't deny that. But you said that 'you will never be accepted as a citizen' and I can't agree with that.
It is stated in the article that 'About 30% of the respondents said they had been on the receiving end of discriminatory remarks “often” or “sometimes' and that 'Those comments were most likely to be made by strangers'
Well, yes. It's a racist country. Yes, you'll never be 'one of them'. But it's not like it's impossible to work there, life a decent life and have normal relations with Japanese people.

Are you trying to give disillusion and most likely already mentally unstable people hope that their lives will be better because they move to a better country to chase a fantasy? I'm sorry, I do not feel it is appropriate to feed into their already flawed thinking. People who think life is going to be sunshine and roses if they move to Japan because they hug their anime pillows every night do not need someone like you conflating the problem by telling them it is OK. It is not. They will face the same problems they have anywhere else PLUS they will face racial discrimination.

They have a safe space in the country they currently live in. They will be outsiders anywhere else. Pic related.

If you really think that 'the Jow Forums way of life' eg. People are shit, can't change and hug pillows all day, then you're the disillusioned one.
Of course if people move to Japan because they like anime it's not gonna end up well. But people like that have no chances of moving to Japan in the first place.

so... thank you for making my point?
Only people who are already exceptional and successful can make it in Japan.

People can get 'exceptional' in a span of a single year. Just takes a lot of work. And those who succeded often start from the scratch, such as these sites.

wow
>you're the disillusioned one
cringe

Do it OP fuck these faggots who tell you otherwise.
If you plan on moving here, be cautious. You may not get stabbed in the public park or robbed in an alley but there are worse things that can happen to you here. Just ask old fucks who lived here for decades. Don't let that stop you though, life is different for everyone. Just be careful.

>that job will become obsolete as technology progresses.
Translation technology will never be perfected. You don't need to worry about this. Translators specifically work on stuff that machines can't.

People say this to try and gatekeep. If you live in a big city, nobody cares. Japanese people do favour other Japanese people over foreigners but they're not nasty to foreigners or "look down" on them, they just default to the familiar option of their own people. And if you have a group of friends then it barely even matters. Don't believe everything you read on the Internet.

First of all, learning is never ever a mistake. You can never lose from gaining knowledge.

Second of all, as someone who self taught Japanese I think it was one of the better decisions I did, and I did it solely for weeb shit. It was fun learning a new language, on the way I managed to consume a lot of media that interested me and assuming you actually get to a good level you can also use it for career or study opportunities.

Look. There's only 4 kinds of reasons for learning a language outside of school.

1. They're living in that country.
2. They're bored.
3. They have a partner that speaks the language.
4. They're a weeb/replace with equivalent.

My friend taught himself Korean because he got obsessed with the TV show The Genius.
I know a white Japanese teacher who learned Japanese because of an idol. (he's pretty normie otherwise)

Learning a language is honestly an incredibly useful skill and will make you more welcome in the country. Even basic conversational knowledge will make people deeply welcome you because motherfucker, you actually spent time studying our language!! You're showing respect by doing so.

So fucking dig into your weebness. Go do scanlations for your fav mangaka or whatever. It's all totally fine.
