It sounds like the employer screwed up. Bad. They could easily have avoided this by dropping a couple hundred dollars to talk to any employment attorney. They have to make a reasonable attempt to accommodate the employee. Had they tried, something in the story would have given a clue to that effect, but it sounds like they made no such attempt.
The case law is clear on this and is intended to favor the employee. In fact, even if he hadn't disclosed his condition to the employer, the employer could still be liable for job actions based on behaviors that are linked to his condition.
