I think it's weird how all the German war crimes happened in the east, which later became soviet territory behind the iron curtain. There were no mass executions in Paris or Amsterdam, or in France and Holland as a whole, but there are reports on every war crime under the sun in the east. Why even have extermination camps in Poland? Why not just shoot or gas everyone on the train? Or just go door to door, if the aim was to kill every jew? Why even make camps? Production for the war economy via labor camps in Poland would make a lot more sense since the supply lines to the front would be shorter from there.

The fact of the matter is how we choose to use this violence (or brutality and force as you say).
While the west has chosen to do so by making us feel free while bounding us to an 8 hour job to pay for our food and roof, socialist societies used said violence to battle against the same people who have us believe we are free here in the west (and others who think like them).
The failures to socialist systems aren't inherent to its structure, they are due to various forms of transitioning to market economy or to western democracy-type states, usually perpetrated by western heroes like Gorbachev or Deng Xiapoing.
