You don't know what "a facebook" is. Before these people repurposed the name in this way, colleges had a "facebook" of their students. If you ever took a college class and the instructor had a photo roster, same basic concept. The first circled paragraph is saying he took a bunch of information available through the college and collected it into an easy to browse book format, condensing hours of tedious work for him into a casual reference for his clients. So he sold his first copy in his Freshman year, and by his senior year, he could do the same process with updated records much faster. Then he goes and copies the same process for the corporate world. It would make sense to move away from the "facebook" name because you don't want it known as a dumb college thing.
