I'll provide a bit of context for this flag. It's not a meme flag in this country (maybe on the Jow Forums, but not in America). Rattlesnakes are dangerous and clever, but polite and defensive. I currently live in the American Southwest because it's rural towns and mountains have the best gun laws in the country. I don't much like the idea of being afraid of technology and banning it rather than learning how to handle it like an adult.

If you are a farmer you don't have to be a member of a gun club to get a gun. The worst part is the gun clubs actively work against our gun rights. We almost got reloading back but gun clubs lobbied hard against it and now you can only reload (reload as in make your own ammo) at gun clubs. Also no they don't realize that guns are fairly easy to manufacture as those writing the laws (I know several of them) have no idea how guns work at all.

Who classifies as a farmer? My family is from longford and I've thought about buying some farm land out there, but does it require a certain number of acres to count as agricultural? In america, sometimes land needs to be at least 5 or 10 acres to be included as "farm land/agricultural" and to receive those sorts of exemptions.

Can confirm. I have a 10/22 takedown with scope and suppressor, great little rifle. Was very easy to get desu. Have had a couple of air rifles previously, will be getting another for my kid in a few years. Have some land and target range set up. Good fun.

I've asked about minimum land requirements and I don't think there actually is one on the books. To quote my local firearms officer, "you'll be grand as long as you're not just shooting it in your back garden or something".

Go to daft.ie and have a look. There are some cheap cottages in rural areas. The problem you have with getting a large amount of land attached to a house is that farms were small because the brits divided up land into small plots and a lot have remained like that since. Larger farms tend to be passed down through generations and very rarely come up for sale. When they do they fetch hefty prices but tend to be better quality land in better parts of the country.

There are some bargins to be had compared to other countries and even compared to the larger towns here, if living in a rural area doesn't put you off. When we say rural here its not like US rural where you might be a days travel from big town. Ireland is pretty small and you would never really be more than an hour from a large enough town to get everything you needed.

yah, I mentioned I live in Arizona. Arizona is a large state, but not at all the largest. Still, driving from one state line through and all the way to the other is further than any part of ireland to any other part of ireland. My friends live 180 miles away from me. That takes roughly 3 hours to get to them. I prefer rural. I don't like living too close to neighbors and I love having a good view of the sky and nature, not concrete and crowds.

I understand the US is huge and I'm guessing Arizona alone is probably bigger than Ireland. That 180 mile commute would probably take you from Dublin on the east coast to somewhere on the west coast in the same time. Ireland really is small and I'm not even sure if there is anywhere truly rural here.

One of the things about Arizona and the whole western united states in general is that there are a lot of open spaces (plains, deserts). forests feel much different. 5 acres of trees feels much more expansive and mysterious than 5 acres of flat desert rocks and dust.

Thats what I like about the countryside in Ireland, the rolling hills, the lush green grass, hedges, hand made dry stone walls, scattered woodland, rivers/streams/lakes, old cottages and the crazy patchwork of roads and laneways. Throw in a multitude of historical sites like castles, Abbeys and forts and its a comfy place on this island. Sometimes I forget how nice it actually is. We constantly curse the rain here but it is only because we get 300 days of it a year that Ireland is so green.

Arizona gets about that much but in sunlight instead. I love the sun, but oh boy, it is brutal here. In the summer, 48 C is not unheard of. You need to be particular in your clothing choices if you intend to leave buildings in that weather. It gets to the point where the wind itself ceases to be a lovely breeze and instead feels like a hot hairdryer blowing on your face. I love this place, but it offers it's own challenges. Constant rain almost sounds nice but I'm sure I'd get sick of it soon enough with that kind of frequency. How does Ireland feel about water powered forms of generating electricity?

The maximum temperature I've been in has been 40c at a moto gp race in Barcelona and that was brutal. I couldn't function properly. As for Ireland water powered electricity, we should be world leaders but were're not. Our west coast gets battered by serious waves regularly and by harnessing that alone we could power the country and more. If I recall there was a large scale prototype wave energy experiment off the coast of Galway but I'm not sure what happened with that. Wind is the same here especially on the west coast, its constant and its strong. Even the trees on the coast grow sideways because of the constant wind, no joke. There is a lot of potential but thats all it is right now.

There are small scale operations on individual houses, wind/solar but I'm not too sure on hydro. The government actually encourages and gives grants for solar installation to certain homeowners. There has been a pretty good uptake on the solar just by looking at the amount of panels on rooftops. I can imagine you really need to be creative in places over there where connectivity can be a problem. I must actually look up the rules on hydro for personal use here. I can't imagine we would be too strict if it didn't affect other landowners or households. Large scale projects here would work I'm sure because of our geography and climate but the investment and foward thinking is whats lacking but that might change.

It isn't the best climate for solar but it does give a reduction in the overall cost of a bill. I probably should clarify that by 300 days of rain, I meant it rains on 300 days but not continuously. If it was continuous I'll probably be a canoe salesman.

yah I figured but still, considering the efficiency of solar power, it can be difficult to justify the cost of getting a solar setup. It's a lot easier to do in the southwestern US because it's so sunny all the time, but I hear in Oregon (further north, borders the pacific ocean) it rains a lot and solar is less viable. They like their hydro electric though. One can dam up streams and turn them into waterwheels to power a whole house.

I think maybe that is why the government here gave grants and discounts for solar installation, to cover initial outlay. Hydro is good if you have access but I'm not sure what percentage of people would have it. I'm guessing its a pretty small number here. I saw a handy precast concrete hydro setup on youtube that looked pretty good. Anyway user it was good chatting with you but I got to go.
