Hiroshima was a major port city on the delta of the Ota river and had been largely untouched by the US Bombing campaign.
Nagasaki was chosen at the last minute by the bomber crew, because it was visible on an otherwise cloudy day.

This kind of thing makes me wonder sometimes. DO they have knowledge of the different paths the future might take, ie different timelines?

Given enough time to contemplate the Soviet troops massing at their borders, they would been a lot less stubborn about surrendering to the US.

Of course it's a little more complicated than that, given that the atomic bomb served the dual purpose of telling the Russians that we didn't actually intend to let them invade Japan, but that message could probably have been delivered in other ways as well.

Anyway, hindsight is 20/20. Truman & co vastly overestimated how easy it would be for the Russians to copy the bomb, which is why they were so eager to show it off.

When faced with far higher casualties from an invasion of the Japanese mainland, which most thought would be necessary to end the war in a timely manner, 200k isn't so bad. Look at the battle of Okinawa for just a taste of what US forces could expect on the mainland. At the time and based on the info they had, it was probably the most humane option.

Worth remembering too is that more civilians were killed during conventional napalm bombing campaigns against Tokyo and other cities leading up to the end of the war.
