Sudan is actually a fairly strategically important country because of its position along the Nile, its significant gold deposits in Darfur, and also oil fields along the border with South Sudan. It's one of the big gateways between Africa and the Arab world, and it has been accused of being a nexus for Islamist terrorism throughout Africa. For that reason, it has in the last 30 years been targeted by the US and its allies for regime change, which was being pushed through major proxy wars such as the Second Congo War and various incredibly shady maneuvers with Chad, Uganda and Eritrea.
I've been following the situation in Sudan for most of the decade, it's honestly a fascinating country in that its run along practically medieval lines while at the same time colliding with global international politics. Hell, a lot of the Darfur conflict (and the previous big civil wars in the South) has been fought by raiders on horseback with kalashnikovs laying waste to whole villages at a time. It's like a war from a bygone age playing out with some modern accoutrements.
