Taleb and Nate have been doing this back & forth for a while, at least a couple years now. They've been having bitch-fights via Twitter especially lately though and I think this caught fire because there was an article published today (or yesterday?) in HuffPo or somewhere. Basically it's Taleb (made lots of money in hedge funds) vs Nate (good sports predictor, perhaps not so good politics... but is beloved by lefties). Taleb so far has been putting out more actual mathematical/theoretical critique.
The main complaint against Nate is that his models are all probabilistic models, which is fine, though often misunderstood by most people. Taleb's point is mostly that 538's models (and the assumptions they are built upon) are shitty and do not account properly for unexpected events (makes sense from Taleb, the Black Swan Theory guy, right?)... or worse still, simply make zero attempt to do so even in the face of potential disruptive events and are overly simplistic.
To wit: Silver's sportsball predictions (sports have very defined rules and bounds, and a plethora of historic, regimented data) are pretty good and even. Politics is all over the fucking board.
That in combination with being probabilistic -- (((calm down goy... I never said he'd win goy, I just said it was likely... oy vey, now you want me to admit I got it wrong?!?!! you don't understand math, goy...))) -- makes Taleb say Nate is a dumbshit misrepresenting his 'predictions' as something they clearly are nott/has no skin in the game. He's not entirely wrong on these points.
In the end Nate's models and predictions don't really fare much better than prediction markets, and often worse than those who intuit results based partly on polls but more on experience (arguably, a more complex model based on years of experience vs pure stat crunching based on vastly incomplete assumptions).

Actually, she was probably out there without direct CCP sponsorship. The party is so in control of China that it doesn't have to order things- take the economic model for example. 5 year plans work because party zealots who work on company executive boards tweak company quotas as necessary, and report noncompliance back to CCP. To maintain plausible deniability, CCP likely worked through several intermediaries to get Zhang to Mar-A-Lago, which I surmise is the reason the operation was botched.
