The brilliance of our political system is *technically* having freedom of speech, press, assembly, etc., but with enough little innocuous caveats and 100 years of intelligence agency research into population control that the system can be kept in stable equilibrium without ever needing to resort to heavy handed measures like internment camps and directly government-controlled news. You're free, just as long as you get the right permit to protest and don't stray over the nebulous line of "hate speech" and don't expect one of the four big corporate newspapers that constitute 98% of what people read to cover you
