Russia has various ethnic groups that have different identities a number of which fall under the base “Russian” identity. For example there is a sizable Finnic-Uralic population in Russia that is accepted as white Russians but they are not Slavic. Even Putin himself is partially Finnic-Uralic.
Additional a number of Russians believe Tatar’s and Siberian people are “Russians” in a sense of nationality as well.

Communism as a system is not popular, but not necessarily always unpopular either, especially among the older generation. You have to understand that even though some things were bad under the communists, there was a strict order and a certain community feeling, which some of the older generation misses. The EU is literally a pyramid scheme for (mainly)Germany/France/etc. They give countries like Poland and Romania all this money for infrastructure etc under the condition that they buy/use German material and firms for the work. I can't find the stat right now but I believe (talking out my ass now but the stat is out there somewhere) that 60-80% of the money the EU(Germany) gives to Countries like Poland/Greece/Romania comes right back to them within 5 years. This is how they keep their economies growing and people employed. Give people money so they can pay you to work.
