Like when I was growing up there weren't any such thing as bullies, jocks, nerds, cliques or anything like that. You had tough kids but that's about it. They stuck up for the weaker/younger kids so you didn't really get bullying. Just the occasional scuffle between the tougher blokes.

And pretty much everyone was mates with everyone else, being sporty/athletic carried absolutely NO prestige at all and being smart/good at class actually got you praised by your peers not tormented like hollywood films.

The whole "jocks vs nerds" type of social stratification is something I've never seen. It's either fictional, or something that boomers had the privilege of growing up with. 90% of people nowadays fall into what would have been considered "nerd." With the rapid influx of minorities, there suddenly became natural segregation into their own groups. Typically people in such situations don't fight with their co-group members, and instead fight with out-groupers. Prison is similar.

Class off 2018 here. My school had mafia-esque gangs. Some were race gangs some weren't. They had anywhere from a handfull of members to a dozen and the largest had maybe 20 people in it.

School tried to put a stop to it but the Jew administration couldn't get anything done until the redneck bumpkins stabbed a black gang member in the stairwell for selling weed to the Chinese exchange students for blowjobs

Idk about now right now but in the 2000's if you were popular, like the top 20%, and lived in a predominately white area they were. The other 80% of students are just average or stoners with nothing special going on.

Not that bad at all really, people actually tend to be generally nice to each other and all of that "sex and drama" bullshit dosent seem to exist in the way it's seen by popular media, it may have been that way in the 90s but now since people in my generation don't really consume all of the garbage Hollywood makes anymore, things have kind of returned to their normal state. People are normal, sex isn't that common, a lot of people are somewhat depressed and alone, but it's better than what's depicted on the big screen, at least here.

A family friend spent time in the US on an exchange.

Apparently the first day of school she got ready as normal and was told by her homestay sister that she needed to dress up for school. She said she felt like she was getting ready to go to prom and that it was very very different to the culture of school back here in Kiwiland.

I loved the show Friday night lights and like to romanticize about it, if I had grown in a small town like that. But for me it was basically the kids that liked to party hung out together between classes and got drunk at parties on the weekends. The nerds did their nerd thing, and I guess the jocks were kind of in between. My senior class sucked at football.

Now that I think about the in between class periods though it was pretty self segregated in that respect. We had two wings to this 4 story school. All the nerdy types would hang out on one floor, for each grade. All those who I guess weren't nerds were on the other half. BUUUUT we bussed in a ton of blacks from the inner city because of some law. They all hung out together on the second floor towards the middle. I think we might have called it the jungle, but It's been too long. long story longer, people did self segregate, but probably not to the extent that is shown in movies.

I've seen it, but never as strict as in the movies. Contrary to the stereotypes, it was actually pretty common in all-white schools for the best athletes to be pretty good students too. The valedictorian might be the star player too in smaller schools.
If anything, there was a divide between popular and unpopular kids, but that was based on lots of things.

There is some truth to it, you have differnet groups of people who regularly hang out, the jocks, the normal kids, the divas, the normal girls, the nerds, the forever alones.

Mostly they just stick to their isolated groups, with the more popular kids occasionally openly mocking the losers. But if you were normal you’d rarely get picked un unprovoked. Most of these jocks are just paper tigers, if you stand up to them they usually back down because they sre afraid of embarassment.

The highschool movies have some truth but like everything in hollywood they make it over dramatic and pussify it to the 10th degree. High school was mostly boring as fuck, bullshitting with friend and trying to leave the campus without getting in trouble.

the only "bullying" I ever saw was when I would be walking down the hall with my short little fat friend, and he would always hipcheck you into the guy walking in the other direction as you were down a narrow hall. It depends on where the school is and the size. In a small school in a nice area it could absolutely be like that but I went to a high school of 4000 kids grade 9-12. With a school that big most people get into cliques and never talk or know about 99% of the rest of the kids. The only way you'd know about someone is if they died in a drunk driving accident cause they the sheriff comes to a school with a bashed up car to show the dangers.

I also noticed that the fashion in high school movies is always 4-5 years behind the times. To adults it's impossible to notice but as a high school kid watching high school movies I always noticed it was outdated. Ie, kids wearing flannel in y2k movies.

I went to a pretty diverse high school in California. Most everyone was really into hip hop culture. There was a good amount of ghetto kids who wanted to fight everyone just to be tough and had that prison rules thug mentality, but not everyone.
The typical white athletic guys were actually nice, but there were definitely groups of nerds, mainly weebs who hung in packs.

I went to a large HS as well. I think those cliques started even earlier than HS too. The social people even in elementary and middle school started forming friendships, and they were mainly the party types. In HS they mostly ended up being the failed athlete party types.

Same here.as I kid I was big and had every group trying to jump me.I had to fight and that's what I did.when I was twelve I was jumped and got cut badly at my thighs and forearms.I took like a man and just went home. Went to HS in 2 different areas of the US, mid 2010s. They were pretty much the same, large, lots of sports teams shit, lots of small but not quite isolated groups due to school size - from 2 to 3k, I guess. No locker culture shit, lockers present but used by minority of students. During lunchbreaks all but two bathrooms were locked because someone was always smoking weed in them. Bathrooms were always dirty asf, btw. Hell, the whole place was dirty, seeing a roach couple of times per week was the norm. This sounds ridiculous, but every other week a fight would happen in the cafeteria during lunch between the students, guess who they were...food was gross, everyone hated on it. Teachers - well, I have no clue how the fuck, like, third of the teachers got their job. They were not teachers, they were adults without any teaching skills who got paid for taking attendance and passing out assignments.
I'm certain I can recollect more, but my desire to continue writing this post ends here.

This is a perfect description of my situation in high school. I guess I was one of the hillbillies. My house was six miles from a fucking paved road. I had a shotgun before I had a bicycle.
