It's not a photograph of visible light per se, but radio waves and visible light are all light waves, so it's a composite photograph taken of radio waves. Many space images are taken in radio waves, x-rays, etc. It doesn't mean they aren't real. When you view infrared military footage, do you consider that fake just because it's not filmed in visible light?

Its not really a “picture” of the black hole, its more like an image representing the black hole that is generated using large quantities of incomplete data gleaned from looking towards the black hole.
