The f-35 was a idealist dream of DOD/DARPA/USAF trying to meld their Area 51 'alien' tech shit (stealth) with the glorious optics of f-14/16/18 tier 'jet fight drama'
But the project was doomed in many ways. For all intents and purposes the 'stealth' project ended with the B-2. Making a super high flying, stealth bomber that carries deadly payloads and looks like a fucking hawk if actually caught on radar is peak 'aerial warfare'.
Trying to make a flashy dog-fighting, twist-n-turn, multi-purpose fighter/low-payload jet with super special 'stealth' was never going to work. Never mind that Red Baron tier jet combat was going away, never mind that missiles from other jets could still lock due to heat signatures, never mind advances in radar tech...
f-35 was a money pit, for a project that was long known to be ultimately pointless (well any new jet model is cool, but no actual niche needed filling). DOD used the project to funnel money into other projects/operations, while selling 'sci-tech' junkies some "hip, cool, new jet fighter now with super secret stealth!"
