The statistics on this meme are intended to get your attention however that doesn’t make them truthful. How many of the guns had been bb or pellet guns or starter pistols? How many shootings are police shooting on the school grounds? How many of the shooting are way past school hours like 10 at night when no students are at school? This information is intentionally misleading or every week we would have a new news story just breaking with multiple dead students. The people that put this together want you to believe these events are caused by unhinged male children but chances are they are not. They also won’t pay attention to gang related shootings because that bring the real number super low.

There's a number of factors, from the rise in popularity of airsoft and paintball, and video games like counter strike and call of duty. Kids grew up and wanted the real thing. To being at war for a couple of decades and guys who were in the service wanted a rifle they were familiar with when they got out.

But the primary driver of gun rights in the US was the assault weapons ban of 1994. Sometime in the late '80s, someone with half a brain in the gun grabbing movement got tired of failing to ban handguns for eighty years, and decided to target the least popular weapon they could find. That would be what would later be called assault weapons. At the time, they were expensive as hell and only gun nuts actually even owned them.

It took a few years, but eventually they got the assault weapons ban. The law was retarded on every level. They came up with a list of features that made a regular semi-auto an assault weapon and said you couldn't sell anything with more than two of the features. So, literally overnight, the manufacturers chopped off the bayonet lugs and flash hiders on all of these rifles and kept selling them. And, being that we're talking about America, everyone decided they needed one before they got banned. In the coming years, everyone started making and selling AR-15 clones. They became the cheapest and by far the most popular rifle in the country. So cheap in fact that Walmart couldn't make a profit selling them.

It also kicked people's butts into gear and got them fighting against new gun laws. Things basically stalled at the federal level no new laws no repeals of old ones, but victories started to be won at the state level. Especially in the concealed carry permit laws.

Now, almost thirty years later, you've got people old enough to vote who grew up shooting the AR-15 their dad bought during the ban. Guns aren't some magical boogey man to them.

So called assault weapons are everywhere. They're cheap. Ammo is fairly cheap (not like it used to be for reasons), but still cheap.

Also, in that same time frame, while we were doubling the number of guns in circulation and making them easier to carry, the murder rate fell by half, along with the violent crime rate in general.
