I think the CCP feels intensely threatened by Christianity, both Protestants and Catholics. They feel this because Christians realize that Xi's authority has a limit, that he's not their ultimate ruler; Jesus Christ is. And Christianity is growing very fast in China, even though the government is trying to put limits on it.

I will bet anything that even some high-ranking members of the CCP are Christian by this point, they're just practicing in secret. Xi is basically China's Diocletian. He's trying to eliminate Christianity but he's going to fail in the end. There are simply too many of them at this point, and when Christians reach a certain threshold of population persecution only makes them stronger and more determined. This is exactly what happened in the Roman Empire.

And, of course, once Diocletian was gone, Rome got Constantine, and everyone knows what happened then.
