Taking images of the black hole requires (9 if I remember correctly) different satellites to take continous images at different times, while they have uninterrupted views of the black hole.

That means, u need to sift through A Lot of data from all those satellites to create the final image. And you also run into the problem of all that data not matching up because of missmatches in frequencies captured by the different satellites.

She found an algebraic solution (basically (VERY BASICALLY) multiplying all the data, so as to identifyt & cancel out the "noise" more easily) to this problem of what would otherwise result in a blurry and inaccurate image. This led her to lead a team that would eventually sift thru the black hole data and compile the final image.

What she did is not "R E V O L U T I O N A R Y". She's just a really smart girl. They all probably did a bulk of the work. But yes she does deserve the hype she's getting, because she found a clever way to solve a unique problem. And because of her, we have the first image of a black hole.

Would we get it without her? Surely. One day. With a different method. Or maybe the same. But we got that image, because of her, and because of what she thought up. She deserves all the hype.

what they did was gather more or less random data and computer generate an image from that which satisfies certain equations , which is also the reason why 4 different groups got similar results
think of simulating a rain drop f.e. which will not lead to the exact same results but usually a similar one due to the nature of the equations

ok let's not ignore the elephant in the room here. He didn't "write" 850,000 lines of code, almost all of that is just data that was added to the project. Nobody writes 850,00 lines of code, it's just not a number of lines of code that a human manually types in in any given project. If you want to use the number of lines contributed to the project as an argument, you have to do more work. You have to split up what is "actually code" and what is just a bunch of data captured from a telescope dumped into a text file or whatever.
