Abbot is actually a very good governor as far as the state economy is concerned. That being said, two reasons he or any other sitting governor won are going away in 2020/2024:

1. Texas is removing straight ticket voting, so you can't just click R and call it a day.

2. He was the incumbent and will likely not seek reelection in 2024.

Illinois, New Jersey and New England will be voting Republican in 15 years tops. New York and Maryland are iffy but it could happen. Texas and Arizona are absolutely going Democratic though.
