i don't know about there being bombs in the WTC, what I do know is this: several structural choices and the heat caused the collapse. It was so hot, that the iron beams used for the WTCs' skeleton (at the region that was hit, of course) bent inward, before quickly expanding outward, causing the top to come falling down.

Since they knew that they'd have to make something up, AND since they knew that they'd have to destroy the ENTIRE towers (pic related), AND since they wanted to blame the entire building 'failure' solely on the planes, they decided to set off the charges in a cascading sequence; starting at the impact site & working down the building. that way they could get people to say, "looks like the building couldn't stand up due to where the plane impacted. those falling floors must have crushed & pulverized the ones beneath 'em, and so on until the whole thing came down."

It's possible that they positioned explosives at key points in the uppermost half of the buildings to produce this serendipitous pancaking effect. It's not theoretically impossible that the top halves of these buildings could have crushed the lower halves, just highly improbable. If the physics were worked out beforehand, all it would have taken were mathematically precise bombs detonated at the exact right time.
