Slave labor was highly inefficient, compared to the average US worker, slaves were paid(through food, housing etc) roughly 80% of what a white farmer was on his own. The Slave owner also had to care for slaves after they were unable to work, they would have been better off using Irish psuedo slave labor where they only had to pay for their food and housing for a few years.
