The building has a timber frame roof above the vaulted ceiling. they would build the vault with timber forms underneath and move them once the mortar had cured. The timbers are large dimensional timbers and don't burn. Imagine putting a cigarette on a log. The log isn't going to catch fire. The only way timber frames can catch fire is if they are SET on fire. You need lots of tinder and fuel to burn a 6' or 8" beam. This was arson I am convinced. Also the timbers are resistant to fire as they were old growth and probably girdled when they were trees. That was the old way of building. The sugars were replaced with resin and the tree would die slowly making the timber harder, stronger, resistant to fire, bugs, rot, etc. Arson, arson, arson.

I build buildings and I've lit many fires in a house that requires wood fired heat. I've lit thousands of fires. I know how wood burns. You can't just light a beam on fire. It needs tinder or an accelerant. I imagine a fire fighter would agree with me.

Pitch doesn't just light on fire if you hold a lighter to it on a beam. You could have to keep the fire there with an accelerant or tinder.

I'm just giving you an assessment of what I think because I've worked with tons of wood structures. I've engineered structures. I'm very familiar with the building techniques of old Europe. I also understand fire, how they catch and how they don't. When I was a kid my dad would get pissed cause I would smoke up the house by putting too much big wood on the fire before it was ready. You can't just light a fire and catch big timber. You have to build up. Maybe there were things in the attic that acted as tinder. I will make that concession.

only an engineer can make that assessment. The entire vaulted ceiling might need to be replaced. Girdled timbers take 20 years to be ready. they would have to go to the forests of Finland tomorrow and start picking out the trees. I'm not sure it can be done in spring. I believe the old way was to do it in winter then fell the tree 20 years after.

I disagree, no one is putting a steel roof on a 12th century building. It is culturally impossible and steel corrodes ungracefully. Copper would be the better choice, save the steel for the reinforcement and bracing it will need.
