I can only tell you what the French told me when I climbed up on top of Amiens Cathedral. And that is that Amiens was bombed by the Germans, but it was done so skillfully that they left all thé churches, museums and administrative buildings standing.
The cathedal in Reims took a misplaced hit, a German bomb exploded right besides it. It destroyed part of the wall, but the cathedral was so well designed, that the structure as a whole folded a bit and the buttresses around the hit took the load of the walls and roof and distributed it evenly on what was left standing. It wasn't repaired after the war, so you can still travel there and inspect it.
