I received a radio failure alert on a plane in the same area and was just clicking around.
I’ve never seen any flight make such a perfect grid over an area like this. Makes sense that it’s research related, but it just seemed odd to me.

No, you inbred basementdweller. You measure/retrieve the concentrations (the partial column from the plane downwards) using the airborne instrument over a region with a known emitter (cities, power plants, etc.).
