Read The Fate of Empires. Rome fell because it had a geocentric belief system. The West lasted very long - around 800 years in a somewhat similar form - because it was centred around a cosmocentric religious system (Christianity). The fall of the West in the past 150 or so years comes in the wake of the victory of Reason and geocentric beliefs. The invasion of barbarians, in both cases, is only a sympton and logical result of declining birthrates brought about by the end or nonexistence of cosmocentric thinking.

Centralized government depends on solid leadership with the capability to accomplish nessecary operations of government. The western empire failed to reform it's government practices after the hundreds of years in perpetual civil war. While Constantine and Theodosius were excellent rulers, they failed to inject a legacy of effective bureaucracy to replace the loss of representative government which couldn't handle an empire so wide.
People also lost faith in the economy due to economic mismanagement that left coinage devalued and people fleeing the urban centers of commerce back to the countryside to barter and be self-sufficient farmers. This drastically reduced funding for the government send stressed social hierarchy as the landed elite held considerable portions of the countryside which made land reform nessecary.
Plus the Emperor was never able to subvert Christians to regard the emperor more than the church. Christianity United the empire, but the emperor never was able to bring it under their reign in the west unlike their more successful brethern in the east where the Patriarch was controlled by the emperor.
