I live in a German speaking/ethnic country and I have lived in the American Midwest (many German Americans) and they are probably the purest white ethnicity in the USA. Maybe if your family emigrated to the upper Midwest or various German emigrant founded towns elsewhere in the mid 1800's or later, but in most parts of the states Germans are intermixed with other Western European groups if they've been here more than a minute. 3 of my grandparents have German last names(the other English), and only one of those three had a mother who had a German last name(the others Irish and Welsh), and several of those lines have been on America since before the founding. Together with the British isles, German descent forms the foundational stock of American white people as a whole, and while moving with various demi-europoids (other than the Irish) is somewhat less common, a lot of Americans of German descent are very mixed.
