This is when Russia stepped in, annexed Ukraine, and began escorting citizens from Ukraine to Russia. Eventually Ukrainians formed a group: militia where they had to fight against their own army. Right Sector and the Ukrainian Army killed many Ukrainians.

This has to do with the pale of settlement and tendency of jews to adopt local sounding surnames.
