Ashkenazi's are the European Jewish tribe. They don't claim to be from Levant. There are countless other tribes, one being the Kohanim. By saying jews are not semites would be like saying american black people are not Africans because most were born in the US. Is a blanket statement and a fallacy.
However regardless, we use the term anti-semite to represent hatred for jews. So if you want to go away with that term because it's not technically accurate, be my guest. But you'll be the only one doing so.

Also jews have separate genetic differences than the rest of the population. So they are distinguished in that regard. If you want to take the actual definitions of race;

b : a class or kind of people unified by shared interests, habits, or characteristics
3a : an actually or potentially interbreeding group within a species also : a taxonomic category (such as a subspecies) representing such a group
..then jews would fit that description. If that's not enough, and you need biological proof that Ashkenazi jews are different than other groups, looks up Tay Sacs.

Rituals like that are outdated and old, if they even existed. Judaism and Christianity both underwent reformations in their respective religious histories. Many archaic practices have been done away with. That said, you will still find extreme practices relative to our current societal standards in every religion nowadays.
The only major religion that hasn't undergone a reformation is Islam. That's why they take the Quran quite literally and you still have extremist groups that want to maintain the same practices from years ago. There is a clear distinction between religious Jews and Christians operating in our world than that of religious Muslims.
I would also like to point out that orthodox jews tend to be more right of center than their secular counterpart.
