There's a couple things that can happen: If the current government in power is voted against a vote of no confidence may be called, if they lose that then an election is held. This only really happens with minority governements. In a majority government case, the leader of the majority party (so the Primer Minister/Premier) must call another election within five years of assuming office, but it usually happens after around four. I'm pretty sure the crown (Queen, Governor General, or Leuitenant Governor) can just tell the government to have an election too, but I don't think that's happened in modern history.
It's been a while since I took high school social so I might be wrong in some places, but that's the gist of it.
