Venezuela sanctions serve warning to 'external actors' like Russia against helping Maduro - Bolton

US National Security Advisor John Bolton has signaled that Washington’s latest sanctions on Venezuela are a “warning” to “external actors” against deploying military assets to support the government of Nicolas Maduro

The US imposed new sanctions on the Central Bank of Venezuela on Wednesday, restricting US transactions and cutting off access to US dollars. It also targeted Cuba with sanctions, including travel restrictions.

Bolton said the measures should be seen by other powers, including Russia, as a warning against providing any help for Maduro government, which the Trump administration has branded “illegitimate.”

>Greek parliament debates resolution to demand payment of German war reparations
Greece’s parliament on Wednesday began debate on a resolution to demand the payment of German war crime reparations. The issue has long been disputed by Berlin. “These demands are always active. They were never set aside by Greece,” parliament chairman Nikos Voutsis said earlier this week. The chamber is expected to approve a resolution calling on the government of Premier Alexis Tsipras “to take all the necessary diplomatic and legal steps to claim and fully satisfy all the demands of the Greek state stemming from World War I and World War II,” AFP reported. A parliamentary committee last year determined that Germany owes Greece at least €270 billion ($305 billion) for World War I damages and looting, atrocities and a forced loan during the Nazi occupation in World War II.

>Turkey’s opposition candidate declared mayor of Istanbul, appeal from Erdogan’s AK Party pending
Turkey’s main opposition candidate was declared Istanbul’s mayor on Wednesday after election recounts were finally completed. New mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was handed a paper which formally granted his mandate as city mayor in a ceremony at an Istanbul court, Reuters reported. However, an appeal by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s AK Party (AKP) for the election to be re-run is still pending. Initial results from the March 31 local elections gave a narrow victory to the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) in Turkey’s commercial hub, ending 25 years of control by the AKP and its Islamist predecessors.

>Referendum on extending Sisi’s rule to be held on April 20-22 – Egypt’s election commission
Egypt’s election commission said on Wednesday that a referendum on constitutional amendments will take place on April 20-22. They include changes potentially allowing President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to stay in office until 2030. A second amendment would provide for setting up an upper parliamentary chamber. The previous day, Egypt’s parliament approved the amendments. The changes would extend Sisi’s current term to six years from four and then allow him to run again for a third term, which would last six years. Cairo was full of banners encouraging Egyptians to participate in the voting even before the date for the referendum was confirmed, Reuters reported.

>Russia believes Damascus should regain control over NE Syria as soon as possible – Lavrov
Moscow believes the Syrian government should regain control over the country’s northeastern region as soon as possible, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday. “There is a need to resolve the issue concerning the country’s northeast and the left bank of the Euphrates River in order to… ensure the restoration of the legitimate government’s control over the region,” Lavrov said at a news conference in Moscow. Among other important goals, the Russian top diplomat cited the need to build dialogue with the Kurds and secure the interests of Turkey “as far as security in Syria’s border areas is concerned,” TASS reports.

>LNA CAPTURES CHINESE-MADE ANTI-AIRCRAFT MISSILES FROM PRO-GNA FORCES

Sources loyal to the National Libyan Army (LNA) released on April 17 several photos showing a Chinese-made FN-6 man-portable air-defense system (MANPAD), which had beenallegedly captured from forces loyal to the Government of National Accord (GNA) during clashes in Tripoli’s outskirts.

The FN-6 MANPAD has a maximum firing range of 6km. Its missile has a maximum speed of 360 m/s when flying head-on. The missile is equipped with infrared homing seeker with fire-and-forget feature.

This type of missiles was not in service with the former Libyan military. Experts believe that it was supplied to GNA forces by Qatar or Sudan, the only two Arab states which have in service missiles of this type. The two states supplied FN-6 MANPADs to militants in Syria in the early years of the conflict there.

Babak Taghvaee, an Iranian defense analyst, claimed few days ago that forces loyal to the GNA used a FN-6 MANPADs to shoot down a MiG-21 fighter jet of the Libyan Air Force (LNA) on April 14. The photos released today supports Taghvaee’s claims.

Maj. Gen. Ahmed al-Mesmari, a spokesman for the LNA, accused Qatar of supplying this type of MANPADs to GNA forces and even to radical groups in the country during an interview with the Egyptian ON TV two years ago. The spokesman said that FN-6 missiles were used not only against LNA warplanes, but even against Egyptian warplanes, which were targeting ISIS positions in Libya back then.

>SYRIAN ARMY DEPLOYS REINFORCEMENT ON BORDER WITH IRAQ AHEAD OF REOPENING KEY INTERNATIONAL HIGHWAY – REPORT

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) deployed a large force in the T2 Station near the border with Iraq on April 16, the pro-government al-Masdar News blog reported, citing a military source.

According to the source, the reinforcements were sent to the border area to secure the international highway linking Syria and Iraq as the two countries prepare to reopen the strategic Qa’im border crossing, that has been closed since 2012.

Last week, head of Iraq’s Border Crossing Authority Kazim al-Aqabi confirmed that the crossing will be reopened once all the requirements for commercial exchange and the passage of people are prepared.

>U.S. SUPPLIES $14 MILLION WORTH OF MILITARY EQUIPMENT TO LEBANESE ARMY

The U.S. Embassy in the Lebanese capital of Beirut announced on April 16 that Washington had delivered $14,3 million worth of military equipment to the Lebanese military as a part an ongoing military aid program.

According to a short press release by the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, the new shipment included night-vision devises, radio systems and other military equipment.

Most of the equipment and weapons supplied to Lebanon under the military aid program are either second-handed or from older generations. Military experts even claim that some of the equipment were down-graded, like the M2A2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) Lebanon received last year.

Earlier this month, the U.S. delivered six ScanEagle unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to the Lebanese military in order to boost its limited reconnaissance capabilities.

?Lebanese experts believe that the U.S. is beefing up its support for the Lebanese military in order to present it later as an alternative for Hezbollah or even to extract concessions from the country’s government on some regional issues.
