Our country is not just one big place dumbshit. USA means united STATES meaning each individual state has its own state laws and economy and culture. There is just as much a difference between say Oregon and Kansas as there is between Canada and the UK.

Without the electoral college canditates would just pander to States which have laws that pander to huge metropolitan areas ( IE New York and California ) and rural areas would end up seeing mass decay as a result. The point of EC is to cap support from any one state at 50%, which then forces candidates for the white house to cast a broader net with a policy that works for most of America and not just the bigger cities.
