Yes. But like with mice, you can test things on them a lot quicker if you can reproduce them with ease. The article mentions that, for a long time now, people always believed you needed a building-sized thing to work with. This proves you can do it in an office or rentable storage unit.

You wouldn't test cosmetics on elephants; It would take too much time and energy to reproduce the experiments. Doing it on mice? You can have twenty today and 200 in a week.

This downsizing is good news for the "they haven't figured out how to make it work right" naysaying. Now a hundred people can be trying to make it work, the world over. Not just the three extant nuclear fusion testing labs in like two places, which are all the size of buildings. Because they are buildings.

It's because it's chronically underfunded.

At current levels it's like trying to push your car across the continental united States. There's testing that literally can't be finished without more money. Experiments sit unused and inoperative because they don't even have enough for data storage and processing.

we already could generate fusion with tabletop reactors, even if not of the contained plasma kind.

a viable technology would either require to be stable for several seconds, if not minutes, or to be possible to operate in burst where the containment requires less energy than the output.The article doesn't even explain if the kind of plasma containment they used has any hope of either being extended indefinitely or can be repeatedly recreated with less energy than outputted.

without that all we can see it as is " scientist now understand slightly better plasma containment systems".at the very best it could be "scientist now knows how to build a cheap and fast test bench to faster study plasma containment of many kinds" but the article doesn't claim the setup is highly versatile for other studies.
doesn't sound like a major breakthrough for fusion.
