You're joking but unironically Ganga got polluted beyond self cleansing limit because the British royal commission in 1913 gave permission to discharge that Kanpur chemical factory's effluent into Ganga. The river had incredible self cleansing property which had surprised them. (BTW Thames was unironically a sewage river until very recent)
