I've lived in wisconsin for 4 years, the most-German state. Most people whose grandparents I talked to remembered how their parents spoke some german, or they had an uncle who had nazi flags or supported the german WWI effort. Obviously this is better than having a state full of Mexicans like NM.

I think the main thing you're ignoring when you romanticize about colonial era Americans is just how severely a wide open western frontier selected for the ultra-independent stereotypically American burgerman, and equally how severely it selected against those people remaining in the east. A southerner derides a foreigner from up north as a yankee, but a frontiersman/pioneer derided him as a tenderfoot.
