Well I mean Assad does the same things that Saddam did, have one group as the ruling class (In Assad's case it's the Alawites while for Saddam it was the Sunni Arabs) and crack down on any group that gets too uppity (usually Islamic Extremists of both sects. and Kurds as always). Though Assad has the support of Russia and Iran and China unlike Saddam who had no allies to help him out in any of these conflicts.
