So how did the west go from hating the Soviets pre 90's to hating the Russians post 90's? Or did it never really change?

They didn’t hate Russia in the 90s. Saddam and Milosovich were the hate sinks: tiny, crazy little dictators sitting on stockpiles of skulls and bombs.

If the media had a Russian as a bad guy it was usually some ex KGB or GRU type running around in the Third World causing trouble with a CIA or FBI mole helping him.

90s was good, you could still not lock your door and leave keys in the ignition of your cars.

I lost my wallet, 500 bucks in it, got it back the next day, tried to give half of it as finders fee but he did not want it so i got him a burger.

It was a simpler, cleaner time... Political correctness was rearing its ugly little head for the very first time. Metal was slowly losing the battle to nigger rap. The worst thing that kids were doing was smoking pot/cigarettes, drinking alcohol, and having sex. And these were almost only ever the bad kids who were never going to go to college.

I came home from school every day (north NJ) and went fishing/hunting/trapping. Poaching animals was a big love of mine... perhaps the biggest. I used to order books out of paper catalogs (Loompanics, Delta Press, Paladin Press, etc), about how to build bombs, make improvised firearm-silencers, bypass locks and security systems, etc. I could often be found boiling mercury in my garage, building potato canons, silencers for my guns, picking locks, filing keys, etc...

Archery was something I practiced constantly with my Dad. And he would bring home cigars a couple times a week for us to smoke together. And when I wasn't doing all this crazy stuff, me and my friends were riding our bikes dozens and dozens of miles, dirtbiking/quadding through the woods, playing Sega Genesis, listening to Metallica, camping, etc...

I see kids today living through their phones, and I feel bad for them. They're not really living at all.

The '90s were a way better (and more sane) time than today. But make no mistake... the culture was already completely rotten on the inside. It just wasn't manifested yet in such external and obvious ways as it is now.

American culture has been profoundly disordered, and anti-traditional since the 1950s. I know you all look at the 50s through rose colored glasses... But the 60s and 70s would have been impossible without the sterile, materialistic groundwork that was already laid.

In the 80s we hated/feared the Soviets. After the Berlin Wall came down, everyone loved the Russians and other ex-Soviet states and wanted to sell them blue jeans. My brother was in college for engineering at that time and he and many others were learning Russian because there was expected to be a lot of opportunity there.
Then the oligarchs in Russia and the West pretty much gobbled up all the wealth there, and Russia struggled for a long time. Americans didn't think about Russia much at all anymore, except for neocons. They wanted their pipeline and more wars, and Jews don't like Russia returning to Christianity, so they started using Russia as a boogeyman again. It didn't become widespread until the Clinton campaign tried to cover up its own Russia/Ukraine dealings by pushing the Trump/Russia hoax, though.

The 90s was an easy time to do this. There was no youtube or masses of camera phones. Video was a rarity, there were no podcasts since almost everything was text or low res pictures which took an age to download. To communicate you used things like mailing lists or newsgroups which were mostly text. There weren't masses of people on it and everything was new, so as a communications platform it was primitive.

Essentially, in Europe there were the communist parties which wanted to replicate the Soviet system. Hardcore guys.

And then there were the Socialist parties. The Socialists basically claimed to be very democratic and what not but really they did not diverge much from communists except in one goal: They liked nice things and did not wanted to go on with a militaristic quasi-soviet imposition of their ideals. No. They were the soft core guys.

But they and the communists/soviets were two sides of the same coin.
Even if sometimes the communists would violently take the power away from the socialists, the socialists essentially wanted the same the communists wanted except they posed as the good guys, and were also great oppositors of communism for the socialists pointed out communist's illiberal and militaristic ways many times.

But the socialists just played the good guys. They pretended to be opposed to communism but wanted exactly that but with a smily face, a more digestable version.

In America you kind of see the same except american leftards still want to be the top guy and even if they hate america still want it to be number one.
