They had to out of necessity, and whites were helping. But, blacks we're taking responsibility for their own affairs and actually doing something.
Black businesses employed black people. Black schools required black teachers. Black medical facilities required black doctors and nurses. As soon as segregation ended blacks were thrown into a worl where they had to compete with whites, and they simply weren't able. Whether they ever will be or would have been eventually is something else entirely.
