if you want to read good ones, look for RECENT submissions with highly-positive vote counts.
that should be a fucking no-brainer but some people look at the ancient stuff that's pretty tacky now but still highly voted because of historical importance to the site, and go "jesus, what a bunch of cliche'd tripe"

there have been some really, really good works of micro-fiction written on there, really crazily creative stuff that uses the whole medium of the website and wiki format in an artistic way. there are also plenty of great articles with zero formatting gimmick, that are just great articles on their own. some are spooky, some are funny, some are sad.
it's worth your while to go into the "discussion" section of every article and see how it's changed and how the author has updated it to try to execute what they're going for, as well as to read others' critiques of the piece.
