It is because Japanese comics and cartoons had a wider variety of shit to read, and had genres which specifically appealed to different genders and age groups.
Comics USED to be like that, in the 1920s-1950s, but then the comics code authority was created to enforce morality and most of the edgy criminal dramas or romance comics were banned due to being too edgy for kids.
Meanwhile in Japan there was a heavy push to take comics away from being "just for kids" and make comics for adults during the same period, which resulted in Japanese comics diversifying at a time when American comics were forced to be superheroes for kids.
Now the American comic market is pathetic.
