I realize that Norway is fundamentally different from the United States, and there's nothing wrong with that. In the United States we are not a fundamentally white country, there are Americans of all ethnic backgrounds and in many ways that's a good thing. The problem is when you have a culture of dependence that many members of certain ethnic groups cling to where they become lazy and unproductive, or worse, they become violent. The goal should be to shun the mindset that leads to an ethnic group being overwhelmingly being a liability on society, while not shunning individuals who are productive (like OP's family) because of their ethnicity.

The United States is a nation that is pro-immigration (as long as it's done legally by people who want to assimilate) and I know many people who immigrated here legally and became U.S. citizens who are better Americans than some of the entitled idiots who were born here. The colonists who rebelled against Great Britain and founded the United States may have been overwhelmingly white, but our Constitution guarantees that all U.S. citizens, regardless of ethnicity, are endowed with certain inalienable rights, and I am proud that the demonym 'American' has no specific ethnicity associated with it.
