This is beneficial to the mind especially for the young. We have seen the musical form dwindle, folk music and even blues which has a 12 bar form still demand some concentration although it's very easy for 20th century westerners. Etudes were designed to be technical exercises. It's the creativity of the composers themselves that made the etudes more enjoyable (think Hanon vs. Czerny or Chopin). But even within the repetitions there was a harmonic structure with some sort of direction, typically tonic-dominant-tonic if Schenker is to be believed. Lots of modern music is essentially prolonging the tonic to the very end, with no sense of direction or fulfillment. It's boring, because the point of popular music is to sell as many units as possible.

And baroque musicians didn't "jam out" to etudes, all of them were either in court and fully immersed in the high art preferred by the upper class (which included common European dances stylized and modified for a more discerning audience) or they engaged in the folk music of their people that stretched back centuries. There is no continuity in modern music, the masses have no deeper connection to the mass produced sounds thrown at us constantly

I quit listening to non-classical because I exhibit OCD symptoms and I started to notice that modern music was making me scatterbrained and unfocused. In the four weeks I've avoided it, I feel like my day to day experience has become more lucid and orderly.
