I dunno, I think early on the site was probably ok according to a friend that used it a lot. I'm not an expert in internet culture economics, all I can confirm is that shit has been going downhill since 2007-2009, which also happens to be where net consolidation begins to start. (Google and co buying out the competition, growing exponentially, and becoming the only main options)

If you watch site traffic by year in archive sites like wayback, you'll see site views for things like youtube, twitter etc all grow exponentially and continue growing for every year after 07-09, while most smaller popular sites shrink during those years. So something fishy definitely happened.

That is entirely made up of bots posting with others bots while being fed data from trending topics etc to make their posts. Last I checked they were fairly messy with their post format, but by now technologies to simulate real human posts are likely very accurate, especially those made by companies with a lot of analytical data like google has. The result is that reddit, Jow Forums, twitter, etc are probably mostly made up of bots that mindlessly repeat popular opinions and upvote content, with some big company selling the controls to the highest bidder to influence public opinion.

If it sounds like a conspiracy theory, have at it, but the technology exists, and if it exists, it's likely being used. I say this also because I spent a lot of time on the net between 2000-2009 and watched the behavior of human users grow prior to any major bot developments, and these people do not act or post like those humans, everything is too proper and less human in their expressions. everything is made up of something else, you walk away feeling like you've read a site article instead of another person.
