I felt the same way but then I confidently stepped back into a small traditional Baptist church and it really defied my expectations. Just don't get caught up in preconceived bias and just dive into it.

If the church is a good church you'll usually know very quickly by the acceptance of the members to you and the bond they have with one another. If the church promotes some perfectionist message then steer clear but if they accept that Christians are imperfect and yet are only doing their best to avoid sin then I'd say it's a good church.

Also, and this is an opinionated preference, but I'd look for churches that promote an extraversive Bible message and don't worship their pastors like some of the mega churches and small cult churches tend to do.
