Why not use the rally to celebrate and remember Robert E. Lee? The man was an absolute legend, considered THE greatest American military mind of all time. This could have been an amazing moment for the country, and the left would have looked like crazed assholes attacking Southern heritage.

These are rough numbers of course but the breakdown I see is that:
30% want an old school conservative platform, think cold war era.
30% want a neo-conservative platform focused on control of world politics, think middle east conflicts, north korea policing, adversarial to China and Russia.
30% want a libertarian conservative platform where the government completely stops fucking around in geopolitics and walks back the last 50 years of legislation in just about every faucet of life.
10% want it to go full white nationalist revival, subvert or kill anyone out of ideological conformity, and establish confederacy 2.0 dreamland.
The left on the other hand has been fighting the same battles, and working toward the same goals since the 20s. Workers rights, minority rights, unions, progressive social policies, regulation of industries, consumer protections, etc etc
The problem is the right doesn't want to actually find out what they want.
At best they come out with support around 70% for whatever new unified platform they hash out. So that means they get a net loss of support if they actually unify their party behind one platform.
So, there is no incentive for them to unify.
On the other hand, a party with no unity will never get anything actually done, as we have seen with the last 2-3 years of a unified 3 branch government.
Its the difference between Obama getting the ACA through congress and Trump to get the Wall funded through congress.

Doesn't really matter though, the last 50 years the Right has essentially been reduced to being a hand-break for the progressives. They have been slowing them, but they are still moving forward.
