This. I read my German-American great-grand-uncle's war diary. He couldn't wait to smash the Hun. I think it was a combination of being in the US for a long time, the fact that there was no unified Germany when their ancestors came over, and a massive anti-german shaming campaign. If you go to the neighborhood grave yard, the grave markers are in German up until after WWI. Then it's all in English (still German surnames).
