I remember in the 90s, part of public assistance was them doing that. A portion of the "try not to starve, poorfag" allotment was them just giving you food. Like you'd get that canned beef that was like dog food, oversalted as hell and completely useless for any culinary application that would require fresh beef. About the only thing to do with it was treat it like potted meat and spread it on crackers or like corned beef for a hash, but it came in these huge 30 oz cans that held more than you'd ever want to eat at any given time.

The gub'mint cheese was pretty good, though. It was a pasteurized cheese product like Velveeta, but it was way better than any other generic Velveeta clone. Just leagues better than Great Value or whatever. I sometimes stop and picture the r&d that went into that.
