There's very little dogma people actively aspire to meet, Shintoism, Buddhism and generic superstition is meshed pretty organically into Japanese every-day life. There are next to no organised Shintoists besides actual religious figures in shrines and temples.

I don't think you understand how, without access to the US market to fund its growth, Japan and south Korea do not exist. They are living beyond their means because they have nearly unfettered access to the United States 320 million people who are able to buy their products. This is how they rapidly developed from extreme poverty in only about 50 years. Prior to that, south Korea was one of the poorest countries on earth and Japan was nothing without western technology.

In short, the Asian countries benefited from colonialism while African countries and india learned nothing.

I'm only 2 years into the machine trades, so my personal experience with all of the high-end machines is short. Most of the work I've done are on 1940s engine lathes, Bridgeports, and German precision grinders from the 70s. My instruments are an assorted mix of vintage Starrett/B&S and Mitutoyo. Of the 3, Mitutoyo is the only one who seems to be continually on-point. The other two have declined in the past few decades.

Instruments and cutting tools are the one area where the west can still really compete, namely sandvik for insert tools and etalon for precision instruments. America is still competitive in conventional cutting tools. Western CNC machine tools are all niche and small market share like HAAS. European machine tools are either very specialized or very old, just like the American stuff. Japan is the one country that can make literally anything at any level of quality
