On one hand, it's too easy for someone with that much power to have an outsize impact on politics and the economy at large, and to accumulate further wealth beyond reason (snowballing).
On the other hand, such powerful individuals can be a force for good by breaking social/technological stagnation and self-capitalizing risky ventures, eg Elon Musk.

Ultimately I think allowing the accumulation of extreme wealth can be a good thing as long as those people are pushed to use it to create new ventures or otherwise spend it themselves (Carnegie-style), and not pass it on to children, relatives, friends, etc.
