DC resident here. It's really neighborhood by neighborhood.

Anacostia, in the Southeast, is the worst part of the city. It's a full-blown ghetto. Crime actually isn't that bad because police finally cracked down on it, but culturally it's still ghetto as fuck.

The Southeast, on the other side of the bridge away from Anacostia, is actually really nice, so you could consider going there.

Arlington, Virginia in the Southwest is pretty much a poor white area, but it's safe, as is the area around Georgetown.

If you live near the capital building, those neighborhoods are super nice and safe, but very expensive.

The far Northwest is extremely nice, but also pretty expensive.

The areas around Howard University and north of there start to get really dangerous and ghetto, and a lot of the people act like animals. Lots of violence and robberies. However, it's easy to get anywhere in the city from there, so if you feel like roughing it, that's a fine place to be.

The Northeast, near Maryland, is a black area, but it's actually a really safe part with good community. I get the feeling they're the blacks who were fed up with the ghetto bullshit from the animals in Anacostia and the central part of the city. It's really hard to get around from up there, but if you want somewhere quiet with nice people, it's a good option.

It's pretty secure as big cities in the US go. Stay away from Southeast and PG County east of the district and you'll basically be fine. Never had an issue, but I only commute there. Besides, there are so many oblivious white liberals there just being a man aware of his surroundings will generally deter criminal types.

If you consider south east DC just do not go near Pennsylvania Avenue. Bus lines bring in all the Anacostia trash across the river.

I would go with 9mm. But even if you choose .40, use hollow points. You should be using hollow points with any pistol caliber.

That’s a 444marlin BFR magnum. With a scope on it I dropped a 300lb bear at 100 yards. May not be a conceal Cary piece but as a nasty piece of work taking a target from concealment it’s a gem and hardly a meme.

Oh it was no joke when it hit the targets. It absolutely shredded them. I actually liked the feel of the revolver because of how my hands are shaped. But the issue for me was the reload time. I could do it pretty fast, but definitely not quick if I was under pressure.

You cannot get hydrostatic shock unless the bullet is going over 2400 feet per second. Anything under about 2400 fps is just going to tear a hole in the target. A 9mm hole is virtually identical to a .40 S&W hole which is 10mm. The hollow points expand to virtually identical diameters. Modern 9mm hollow points penetrate to the same optimal depth in ballistics gel as .40 or 10mm. However, with 9mm you get an extra round or two of capacity in ithe same size gun. You also get lower recoil for faster follow up shots.

TLDR: A hole is a hole. No pistols produce hydrostatic shock like a rifle so capacity and ability for fast follow up shots is more important than "muh stopping powa".

No they’re not. They might have a heavier pull on the trigger but that’s about it. Plus you have a safety on most semi autos, which makes it that much safer. Just remember your trigger discipline and you’ll be fine, meaning don’t have your finger on the trigger until you’re ready to shoot

The larger diameter of the expanded hollow point is more likely to strike a vital organ, nerve, artery/vein, bone etc.

Regardless of what caliber you choose, I would go with Federal HST hollow points. Speer Gold dot is also a great choice.

Whatever you buy, find a range where you can practice where you won’t get hassled. Be prepared to shoot at least $50-100 of ammo minimum once a week to git gud and stay gud.

This is also important, choose good quality ammo to carry for self defense. For the most part if you buy american ammo it’s good enough, with federal or remington being my personal choices. Use the cheap shit for target shooting or practice, just means you have to clean your gun more often

The HST +P rounds I had to order online.
Make sure you fire at least 2 magazines full of them to make sure they work alright with your firearm.
I was surprised that my cheap $250 Taurus has never had an issue.
Fired over 500 rounds out of it and never once jammed

That’s not true, you don’t need to spend 2-400 bucks a month on ammo to be able to defend yourself. Yeah, go practice every once in a while but it’s not like you’re training for competition or something. You can practice picking up your gun without wasting a single dollar and that’ll give you way more of an advantage than being a “sharp shooter” especially for self defense, which is what you’re asking about
