An user a few weeks ago posted something about the color coding of the clown hair wig serving as something of a digital fingerprint that allows people to see better how memes are propogated. That's an immediate benefit, although a bit tin-foil. The major benefit is that they've established a foundational memetic like bane which they can throw in front of the normies that doesn't result in confusion. Baneisms produces confusion because people first associate it with Batman, and that's even if they recognize Bane. Clowns are easy to recognize; many people also innately hate them.
They don't need a lot of reasons,they just need a few. Look at it as them trying to compete in the memetic arms race.
