Here's the shocker, most of my friends are agnostic atheists the topic never gets brought up and if it does it ends pretty quickly. My dad was religious my mom was not and they still got married in a church because my dad wanted to. I'm still baptized and I'm still going to baptize my kids despite being an atheist myself. I'm similar. I grew up Christian and firmly held those beliefs until my early 20's. There was not a single external word or action at the time that could shake my faith. As I grew and gained more life experience, it just didn't make sense to me anymore. I think it gives me a unique perspective compared to someone who has been either religious or atheist their whole life. I can understand people having complete faith in something, even if I disagree with it. "Christians" having such a vile distain for non-believers always gives me a chuckle though. This is where I get caught up. I have no problem with the idea of an entity that is pervasive everywhere or that created the universe (I would consider myself agnostic on this idea), but the idea that "Christians are the ones that finally got it right" is pretty silly. Organized religion in the theological sense is the original psy-op. Culturally though, Christianity has many merits and helped create western society and we should aim to keep the cultural values.

Ideology and general leaning (which includes religion) is largely genetic. Even if the kids would be atheists (a lot less likely when coming from a non-atheist family), they'd also not breed. This is basically accelerated natural selection, all the traits that lead to atheism are being selected out really fast.

The step from atheism to theism is a lot easier to make than the step from atheism to Christianity. Some forms of theism are far less repugnant to reason than Christianity.

And, btw, there are even some Christian heresies that are far less repugnant to reason than Christianity. Gnostic teachings, for instance, make a lot more sense than those offered by Christian orthodoxy.

There's an increasing amount of atheists who are in the reverse position, they grew up in the nu-atheist movement with little or no pressure from religion and they find the arguments for god lacking. But they do understand the importance of some of the Christian teachings or certainly at least feel the hole left in the moral landscape by removing religion.

I personally think that'll be the biggest challenge in our century, will be finding some kind of secular replacement for traditional conservatism and religion that actually works and is sustainable. Because societies in the west are becoming rapidly more secular, the UK is now basically majority atheist.

One interesting phenomena is the large number of atheists interested in Jordan Peterson's biblical lectures, the comments on youtube are crammed with "I'm an atheist, but" comments, so there seems to be a growing demand for it.
