I mean, consider preferencing ALP ahead of Greens. This could result in the ALP having the balance of power, meaning they control both houses and pass ample amounts of crazy laws. But consider preferencing the Greens ahead of the ALP. This could mean the Greens hold the balance of power and cooperate with the ALP so that ALP gets most of what they want and the Greens also get a few extra crazy bits thrown their way.
It's pretty difficult to see which would be worse. If I leave them both out of the preferences then maybe it sends a signal to someone, somewhere when there ends up being candidates winning with only a small fraction of a full quota.
